Western Prosthodontic Centre

What is a prosthodontist?

Prosthodontists seek additional training and education beyond that of the five-year general dentist degree by completing a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry programme, which takes three years and covers all aspects of dentistry with an in-depth focus on reconstruction, tooth-replacement, full mouth cases and congenital and developmental disorders.

The scope of prosthodontic care includes:

  • Fixed restorations – both tooth and implant-supported
  • Dental implants
  • Cosmetic dentistry
  • Partial and complete dentures
  • Implant dentures
  • Joint and muscle disorders
  • Complex occlusal (bite alignment) cases

When repairing and restoring a damaged or developmentally challenged mouth, numerous aspects of patient health must be considered.

  • Occlusion and bite load
  • Jaw function
  • Allergies to specific dental materials
  • Bone quality

In cases of routine or single dental restorations, a general dentist is typically recommended. When the entire jaw system or bite is affected by possible treatment, however, a prosthodontist may be required to ensure an ideal outcome for both aesthetics and function of the dental system.

Dr Bradley Shepherd provides this valuable service to the patients of Perth at Western Prosthodontic Centre.
